Reduce Your Individual Income Taxes by Contributing to the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship
75% of the qualified contribution is allowed for as an Illinois income tax credit.

The Invest in Kids Scholarship Tax Credit Program was enacted in 2017. Individuals and businesses are allowed to take a credit against their Illinois income taxes to the extent of 75% of their contributions to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). The SGOs, in turn, use the funds to provide scholarships to students who have a financial need to attend qualified, non-public schools and technical academies in Illinois. K through 12 students who meet the need-based criteria can apply for scholarship through the Program, and the scholarships will cover up to 100% of private school tuition, up to a maximum of the average Illinois cost to educate, which is approximately $13,000. There are also multipliers in the Program that allow for even larger scholarships to students who are gifted, have learning needs, have language barriers to learning, or other special education qualifications.
As an example, a qualifying $1,000 contribution will net a $750 Illinois tax credit. There is a cap to the amount of the credit that can be taken, but the cap is $1 million per year per taxpayer. To hit the $1 million credit cap, a taxpayer can contribute about $1.333 million. To take the Illinois credit, it is very important to note that donors may NOT take a Federal income tax deduction for gifts made to SGOs.
A taxpayer must request approval to make a contribution and receive the Contribution Authorization Certificate prior to making the contribution. Applications for the 2022 tax year became available as of January 1, 2022. To take part in this Program, donors make an account with the Illinois Department of Revenue at mytax.illinois.gov. The registration process can take up to 10 business days, after which donors may reserve their tax credit on a first-come, first-served basis (overall donations to this Program are capped at $100 million, and are further distributed geographically throughout Illinois), and individual donors can choose to contribute to specific SGOs.
This may be one of the better under-the-radar tax credit opportunities out there, if your charitable giving philosophy lines up with the educational purpose of the Scholarship Tax Credit Program. More information may be found on the Illinois Department of Revenue website:
